The most common cause of problems in the operation of electronic equipment are transient surges coming through the power line cables. The main reason why modern electronic systems, like for example the telecommunication equipment, are sensitive to electromagnetic interference is the increasing use of large-scale integrated semiconductor devices in the front end of the equipment.
Lightning strikes are the most common source of surges. Lightning is a very intense and unpredictable phenomenon and can induce overvoltages on overhead power lines located up to 4 km from the position hit by the lightning. Moreover, lightning current diffusion in the ground may also affect underground networks routed through the particular area. In addition to lightning strikes, surges in the electrical power supply network are generated by switching on/off of inductive loads like motors, by capacitor switching for the correction of power factor, or by network faults.
In order to protect the equipment and the users, special devices should be installed on the power supply, at the power service entrance of the active equipment. These devices will divert the surges to the earth.
